Telmisartan is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is also prescribed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, in adults over 55 who are at high risk. Additionally, it can be used to treat heart failure. 
Mechanism of action
Telmisartan belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It works by blocking the effects of a substance in the body called angiotensin II, which normally causes blood vessels to tighten. By blocking angiotensin II, telmisartan helps to relax blood vessels, which in turn lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow to the heart. This also increases the supply of oxygen to the heart. 
Dosage
The typical starting dose for hypertension is 40 mg once daily, with a maintenance dosage ranging from 20 mg to 80 mg once daily. For reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke, the recommended dose is typically 80 mg once daily. The blood pressure-lowering effects of telmisartan usually become apparent within two weeks, with the maximum reduction achieved after about four weeks.
